PARIS - a fan descended onto the playing surface, ran over to a player and managed to elude “security” for approximately 30 seconds before he was apprehended. Thankfully, the only thing this knucklehead wanted was a selfie with Roger Federer but it’s still completely inexcusable for a Grand Slam tournament to let this happen, 22 years after the horrific Monica Seles incident that should continue to be the moment that defines how much security is needed on a tennis court.
Federer voiced his displeasure after the match. “Well, I’m not happy about it,” he said. “Obviously not one second I’m happy about it.” He then called for security reform, not just at the French Open but at all worldwide tournaments.
“We need to make sure that it’s safe out there and people don’t just wander on the court like a free pass,” Federer said.
